I found the cause [of/for] the misbehaviour

I found the cause [of/for] the misbehaviour

I struggle to prefer one over the other. I first wrote:
OK, I found the cause of the misbehaviour.
But while rereading I thought to myself that I would actually say,
OK, I found the cause for the misbehaviour.
Do you see a subtle difference in meaning between of and for in this very
context? Do you find one more fitting than the other?
I know there's previous discussion on "cause of" vs. "cause for", but it's
more general. I am asking about this particular sentence.
